Detroit will always be my first home. Raised in the midwest by an east coast parent. Sometimes it all balances out. I see Detroit's beauty because of this, but will never gloss over its self-abusive patterns.
When Detroit started investing in yuppie-centered lofts and casinos instead of its schools and people, a clear decision was made. I kept saying to my Detroit friends that it was backwards. Invest in the schools and build the city's infrastructure, turn-out educated citizens and make the best long-term investment.
The answer, from Dan Rather's point of view, hurts.
Change is not free and never easy.
